TV News: The New Normal

I know I just did a post on this but I wanted to shout out to a new show that I think you should check out called The New Normal. The Pilot is available to watch on Hulu – but it also begins airing tonight on NBC. You know it’s good because One Million Moms has already protested it.

The shows focus is a gay couple who decide they want a child, and a young single mom who wants a better life for herself and her daughter. From what I could piece together from the pilot it looks like they’re going to follow the surrogacy while they show a different type of family. I’m stoked on these types of shows (ex: modern family) and think they really help broaden the perception of what a family can be. This one (created by Ryan Murphy) feels fresh, sweet, and funny to boot.

Okay, and Andrew Rannells being absolutely adorable helps too.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

What I’m watching:

I just finished the series finale of Big Love. It was really clear from the beginning that they were setting it up to tie up loose ends. My only complaint was the last five minutes or so of the episode when they seemingly created new loose ends. What was Bill writing on that legal pad? Is Margene leaving for what she’d intended on doing before? If so, are the other two wives watching her children? Do they still own the three houses? If so, how do they do that if they’d just lost Home Plus? What is the group dynamic of a polygamous family when the husband dies? What about Bill’s mother? I can’t remember if she’d asked him to kill her or if she was just falling asleep or did she go naturally? Regardless, the episode was touching… momentarily, and I’m glad there won’t be another season.

I was definitely pleased that Hank was found guilty in this past episode of Californication. I started out the episode with the idea that the only way they could go was some miraculous win but then I remembered that he might not go to jail. I don’t know if it’s because the episodes are so short, or what, but this episode didn’t really feel like it went anywhere. That’s partially a good thing (they’re staying on subject) but partially frustrating (what’s happening?) Also- When are we going to find out the father of Marcy’s baby? I feel like they’ve drawn it out and teased too much. Are we going to have to wait until she pops?

In short, Fringe is particularly incredibly lately, Secret Diary is lacking… but still predictably hot, and I am sick of having one week – two week breaks between all of my shows. Vampire Diaries? What is even happening? They have been blessed with a gorgeous cast… good on them, I won’t give up quite yet.

That’s all I’ve got.

Oh– except breakup sex. Anyone have any thoughts? Good? Bad? Sad?

TV Check In

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these.

Days until Return-

  • Torchwood 165
  • Nurse Jackie 70
  • United States of Tara 70
  • ANTM 37
  • Glee 20
  • Secret Diary of a Call Girl 10
  • Vampire Diaries 10
  • Fringe 4
  • Big Love 2

The latest shows I’ve been watching, and new shows I’m getting into,

  • Skins (UK)
  • Shameless (USA)
  • Vampire Diaries
  • Californication

I started watching Skins because I started hearing about the US version coming out soon and the original tends to be better than the remake. Double the fact that it was known to push boundaries (in regards to sex/sexuality/gender) and is written by those the same age as portrayed in the show… sold. I’m only a few episodes into the first season but it’s fairly well done and I’m impressed with the range of characters they chose.

Shameless aired last week, I think, and stars William H Macy and Emmy Rossum who I both really enjoy. I didn’t try out the original for this show but considering it was airing on Showtime and not MTV I didn’t really feel the need to. A working class family of 8 in Chicago, this show proved to be more drama and less sit-com.  Thank god.

I finally gave in to the Vampire Diaries as a brain-rot show (think: gossip girl, hellcats, 90210, or old school sabrina the teenage witch)– The CW (previously the WB) does these shows right. It took me a while to get sucked into it but the main characters are so fantastically gorgeous it’s hard to stop watching now.

I watched the first two seasons of Californication as they aired and somehow got lost in the third. I recently watched it up to current, including what is out of the latest season, and I’m hooked again. There is just something about David Duchovny that is so absolutely perfect for the role. Maybe it’s because he live his character. Maybe it’s because I still partially think of him as Mulder. Either way. Plus you can’t really complain about the graphic sex scenes and gratuitous nudity… (Or maybe you can?)

What are you watching, what are you looking forward to coming back?
