It’s that magical time of year when the deadlines you’d written in red ink start appearing more clearly through the pages of your moleskine planner. When loan companies start emailing you sinister sounding emails (hey, don’t worry about your loans right now, but we’re here when you need us…) and that magical time when you realize you’re less than a year away from walking right off the edge of the yellow brick road into post-undergraduate hell.
Post under graduate hell.
I like college. I’m one of those irritating student-for-life kids. I like picking out new notebooks and pens and eagerly awaiting the professor to walk in on the first day of class. I love developing new strong feelings of resentment towards other people when I make poor life choices. I didn’t study hard enough, yeah well, that question about Nietzsche had at least four alternative answers so it shouldn’t have been true or false.
I’ve finished my minor – Gender, Sexuality, and Queer studies. But it sounds a bit unimpressive when you get around to it. No, I don’t have my degree yet. But I do have a minor in Human Sexuality. No, I don’t think I’ll ever feel quite satisfied until I’ve done it all. I’m leaning in, jesus christ, I’m leaning in so far my breasts are about to fall out of my shirt. What more do you want, Sandberg?!
I’m applying for graduation. I’m applying for motha fucking graduation. And then I’m standing in the hall of life choices as they all whirl past me. So many to pick, so many to choose from! It’ll all be okay, it’ll all be great. I’ll get through this term, I’ll get through the next, and then – like always – whatever comes next will find me. Probably when I’m looking in the opposite direction.
If you’re interested in human sexuality, womens studies, men and masculinity, queer studies, or anything even remotely related to the above, try finding a college near you that offers courses for these subjects. It’s a bright and exciting place to be – these classrooms. With bright and exciting people, talking about new and exciting ideas.
